Stanley Garage Door Opener
Stanley Garage door openers were a very popular brand of garage door openers for many years. You'll find them in many homes across this country. Some may be 20 years or more old and still working, their owners never realizing that they have a piece of garage door opener history right in their garage! I've seen these old garage door openers with nothing more than the motor and gears still working, the housings for some reason were gone but the unit still operated! In my opinion, a Stanley Garage door opener was one of the easiest to repair if you can find original Stanley garage door opener parts. There are several aftermarket makers of these parts, but my experience is that sometimes the parts they send are not the parts that fit!

Before starting repairs to any garage door opener, make sure the power is shut off to the breaker to the unit. If it's a corded unit plugged into an outlet, make sure you unplug the outlet and undo the clamp that attaches the chain to the garage door itself. Stanley garage door repairs can be dangerous to attempt for someone unfamiliar with how a garage door opener operates. I know they look simple, but you have to remember that the garage door is the largest moving thing in your home. It can and will hurt you and others if you don't know what you're doing. It's advisable to look around and find your Stanley Garage door manual before you start. If you can't find it, buy one from someone who carries Stanley garage door parts or go to ebay, I see them on there all the time. Make sure the Stanley garage door manual you buy is the right one for your model!
The single biggest part most people look for is the Stanley garage door opener remote. Finding a universal remote to work with a Stanley can be challenging to say the least. I always check ebay for used Stanley garage door opener remotes or Craigslist.

Common Problems With Stanley Garage Door Openers
As a former home inspector, I got to see way more than my share of old Stanley garage door openers. I was amazed at how many of these units were still going. One safety warning I will give most people is this. There are many of these old units that were made and are still in use today that were manufactured before the requirement of the auto reverse feature. You know, those two little light sensors that sit at the lower ends of the Garage door tracks and to reverse the door and prevent people, pets and other things from getting crushed by the door. Yeah, those things. So if you happen to have on of those Stanley garage door openers without the sensors, or any other brand for that matter, get it replaced with a new garage door opener. The risk are not worth it! And if you or someone else has installed a Garage Door opener and installed the sensors in the garage ceiling pointing at each other so they wouldn't reverse, you're stupid if you did it and you're not the sharpest knife in the drawer if you continue to use the opener in that fashion. That's a huge safety issue. One that could get you or someone else killed in the even they were trapped under the door! If you can't make your sensors work, then get a professional garage door opener technician to do it for you!

I don't have a stanley opener, but your points are well taken anyway, particularly disconnecting the power. Electricity and moving parts can be dangerous when fingers are also in the area.
Thanks for the tips!
