Olympic Weight Set Reviews

When you get serious about losing weight, one thing you'll learn is that muscles burn more calories than fat. Yes, muscles weight more than fat also, but what would you rather have, 200 lbs of fat or 200lbs of muscle? I thought as much! So if you're serious about losing weight, you'll need to build good solid muscle. Toning helps, but it isn't everything. And before you run off and buy cheap weight sets from the Dollar store, be wise and read this Olympic Weight Set Reviews before heading out to buy home gym equipment.

You see, that cheap exercise equipment is plastic covered and sand filled. That's all well and okay until it fails. Also, once you walk out of the store with that weight bench, the price plummets. Not so with an Olympic weight set. You'll have an Olympic weight set long after the plastic coating on your dime store weight set has cracked and spilled sand all over the place!

Avoid Cheap Exercise Equipment

It seems everyone wants to lose weight, and that's cool and healthy. But many people will spend a fortune on gym memberships, clothes, video's and prepared food but then want to buy the cheapest weight set they can find. The problem with this is it can be dangerous! Those weight sets are cheap for a reason, DUH! I've had more than one collar fail on a bar bell, sending the weights on one side crashing to the floor then the other side immediately hitting the floor as well because it had no counter balance on it!

Since I bought my Olympic weight set about 15 years ago, I've had no problems other than getting motivated to use it! The old saying, "You get what you pay for" is just as true with weight sets as it is with anything else!

York Barbell 300 lb Olympic Weight Set With Bar and Collars

My buddy just bout this set from Amazon and he absolutely loves it. I have to admit, it almost makes me want to sell my weight bench and weights so I can own this one. Problem is, my Wife doesn't see the need for a new Olympic weight set...yet!

York has been around since the 30's and is known for their high quality weight lifting equipment. My old Olympic set is a York and I can guarantee you it'll be around for another 15 years! This great 300 lb Olympic set is no exception as you can be assured that the quality and durability meet or exceed expectations. With this 300lb weight set from York, you'll get seven chrome bar and spring collars, 1 chrome bar that weighs 45lbs by itself (see, I told you they build quality!), two 2.5lb weights, four 5lb weights, two 10lb weights, two 25lb weights, two 35lb plates and two 45lb plates. The chrome bar is rated for 700 pounds and comes with Olympic collars. This bar is better quality than most bars you'll find in this price range. The plates are cast iron so you know they'll last as long, or longer than you!

Troy's VTX Premium Grade Olympic 300 lb. Weight Set

Troy is another manufacturer of weight lifting equipment that has been around quite a while and builds extremely high quality equipment. I have seen weight sets that were over 50 years old and they didn't look like they were more than a few years old.

The Troy VTX Olympic weight set makes it easy to work out in your home, the Garage or on the Patio. With this high quality set, you'll get the following:

  • A 7 foot Olympic chrome bar that weighs 45lbs
  • 2-2.5lb Plates
  • 4-5lb Plates
  • 2-10lb Plates
  • 2-25lb Plates
  • 2-35lb Plates
  • 2-45lb Plates
  • Olympic collars
  • 1 year warranty

Overall, this is a splendid deal and this set will last a very, very long time. You won't find one that is better quality at any price in my opinion.

Cap Barbell 300lb Olympic Weight Set

If you want a good piece of gym equipment but the above prices of Olympic weight sets scared you (remember, I said you get what you pay for?) then you may want to try this weight set. My Sister bought it two years ago for her teenage boys to use in the basement. She's been happy with it and so have they. They actually use this to work out on instead of goofing off! (one is on the Wrestling team)

The set I looked at was not near the quality of the York or Troy set above. It had casting imperfections in the plates. If the look of the plate is going to be a problem, then this set is probably not for you. On the other hand, if you just want a cheap weight set, then his is much better than what you can find in most retail stores.

With this set, you'll get the following:

  1. 2x45 pound plates with Olympic sized holes
  2. 2x35 Plates
  3. 2x25 Plates
  4. 2x10 Plates
  5. 4x5 Plates
  6. 2x2.5 Plates
  7. 7' long Olympic straight bar - chrome plated and ribbed to help hold the plates on
  8. 2 chrome plated olympic sized spring collars
  9. 30 day manufacturers warranty

One thing about my Sister's set that caught my eye was that the plates have just enough of a single sided lip on them for handling. This may be a problem for you if you're used to plates with hand holds, double lips, or both. If you're not sure that a weight set is right for you and don't want to sink a lot of money into a set and don't care about how the plates look or handle, then this could be the set for you. As you saw in this Olympic Weight Set Reviews, I prefer the higher end weight sets, but that's just me. You mileage may vary!
